Also known as cat's AIDS, this is one of the most spread ilnesses in cats. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to prevent it.
The main question onwers whose cats are serum positive use to ask me is What should I do? Shall I put him to sleep? How can I care for him now?. Well, my advise depends on the case. As you may guess, there is no treatment to feline AIDS, but:
También conocido como el SIDA felino, ésta es una de las más extendidas enfermedades en gatos. Por desgracia, no hay vacuna preventiva.
La pregunta que más me hacen los dueños de un gato seropositivo es ¿qué debo hacer? ¿debería sacrificarlo? ¿cómo puedo cuidar de él?. Mi consejo depende de cada caso. Como puede imaginar, no hay tratamiento para el sida felino pero:
- In case of having several cats, each one should have a blood test, in case any of them is not infected yet. In that case, either the owner must prevent infection (by putting them apart, sterilization to prevent fights, etc), or get rid of the infected one.
- En el caso de tener varios gatos, cada uno debería pasar un test de sangre, in caso de que alguno no estuviera infectado. En ese caso el dueño, bien protege a los no infectados (separándolos, esterilizando para evitar peleas, etc), o se deshace del infectado
- some cats look very healthy, are indoors and there is no risk for other cats to get the illness. In these cases I advise to keep the cat as usual, as long as he's not feeling bad, or getting worse.
- Algunos gatos parecen basttante sanos, son de interior y no suponen un riesgo para otros gatos. En estos casos recomiendo mantener al gato como siempre, mientras no se sienta mal o empeore.
- In outdoor cats, the infected one is always a risk to others. Is he prone to fights? Is he the "tom cat" of the neighbourhood?
- En gatos de exterior, el infectado siempre pondrá en riesgo a los demás. ¿tiende a pelearse con otros? ¿es el gato dominante o alfa del vecindario?
- Most important, Is he suffering? The cat in the photo was suffering from chronic gingivitis to the point that he was all bones and skin, not being able to eat or drink, giving up his hygiene, and was decided to put him to sleep.
- Lo más importante ¿está sufriendo? El gato de la foto padecía una gingivitis crónica hasta el punto que era todo hueso y pellejo, incapaz de comer y beber, abandonando su higiene, y se decidió sacrificarlo.
