As I stressed in a previous post, there are several types of manges. This is another one. In this case the mite is Demodex canis and it was found on the nose of a female rottweiler of 1,5 y.o.
Demodetic mange is very typical in young dogs, not being a dangerous illness in most of them, even disappearing in the long run without treatment in animals with a strong immune system and a bit older. But some cases are a real nuisance for both the dog and the owner, when the pet cannot stop scratching all his body, his hair falls, and the skin becomes ugly, dry, thick, flaky, even bleeding from its chaps. There are lots of
treatments in the market, being the most common, and less applied every day, a course of baths with amitraz. Other safer treatments are pipettes of "advocate", "stronghold(1)"or "promeris duo"

Demodex found in a 4 months old Staffordshire terrier |
(1) Although "stronghold" is sold to treat against fleas, roundworms, hookworms, heartworms, biting lice, sarcoptic mange and ear mites, it seems to works on demodic mange.
