Stones in bladder/piedras en la vejiga

On a very busy day, an emergency blockade turns up. A 10 y.o. female shih tzu  fortunately, was able to pass water on her way to our practice. Within 48h her owner had collected two stones she passed in her urine (photo with 20p coin). Several radiographies made it clear there were much and bigger stones still in the bladder. She was sent home with antibiotics and painkiller, booked for surgery early the next morning.

Her induction to anaesthesia was a nightmare for the vet nurse team. Being a senior, overweight, and a breed prone to heart failure dog did not help. Under sedation, an urine catether allowed us to collect some urine sample to perform an in-house urianalysis, as well as be needed for flushing during before and during the surgery.

Su inducción a la anestesia fué una pesadilla para el equipo de las enfermeras. El ser tan mayor, el sobrepeso, y una raza propensa a fallo cardíaco no ayudaba. Bajo sedación, un catéter urinario nos permitió recoger muestras de orina para un urianálisis, así como ser necesario para limpiar de arena la vejiga antes y durante la operación.

More radiographies showed there was one stone in utethra and, at least three big stones, with lots of very small ones, in the bladder. Fortunately, her heart arrithmia and bradichardia could be controlled, and all over the surgery she was constantly monitored.

Varias radiografías mostraron que había una piedra en la uretra y, al menos, tres grandes piedras, con muchas más pequeñas, en la vejiga. Por suerte, la arrítmia cardíaca y la bradicardia se pudieron controlar, y durante toda la cirugía estuvo monitorizada.

The surgery was performed through a small incision on the ventral side of the bladder that let us remove all the stones. Absorbable suture prevented the induction of making further stones within the bladder. Several layers of stitches prevented any leakage of urine, and the urine catheter gave the bladder some time to heal and close.

La cirugía se realizó a través de un pequeño orificio en la cara ventral de la vejiga, que nos permitió sacar las piedras. Sutura absorbible evita inducir que se produzcan más piedras dentro de ella. Varias capas de puntos previenen la fuga de orina, y la sonda urinaria da a la vejiga un tiempo para curar y cerrar.

However, another difficult task will be changing the diet of a dog used to eating a very rich in calories and protein food for her 10 years of life. In fact, her owner needed a lor of support to achieve it, for her pet is likely to make stones again if her diet is not changed.

Sin embargo, otra tarea difícil será cambiar la dieta de una perra acostumbrada a una comida rica en energía y proteínas durante los 10 años de su vida. De hecho, la dueña necesitó de mucha ayuda para lograrlo, pues su mascota probablemente producirá más piedras si su dieta no se altera.

In summary, although the surgery itself is not a very complicated one, there is always a risk in anaesthetise an animal, even higher in elderly and overweight ones, and the benefits of this surgery exceeds the problems that this condition will cause to the pet. A complete blockade of the urethra means a slow and painful death within days.

En resumen, aunque la cirugía en sí no es complicada, siempre hay un riesgo en anestesiar un animal, aún mayor si es senil con sobrepeso, y los beneficios de esta cirugía superan los problemas que esta enfermedad causará al animal. Un bloqueo total de la uretra significa una muerte lenta y dolorosa en pocos días.
